Apni Raahein, Apni Azaadi is a radio series on road safety, with a special focus on Gurgaon. The radio series, inaugurated on August 15, 2021, is a partnership between Gurgaon Ki Awaaz Samudayik Radio, Gurugram District Administration and Raahgiri Foundation, with support from Jubilant Food Pvt. Ltd.

District Administration Gurugram (formerly Gurgaon) manages District Gurugram, which is located 30 Km south of National Capital New Delhi, about 10 Kilometers from Dwarka sub-city and 268 Km south of Chandigarh, the State Capital. Over the past 25 years the city has undergone rapid development and construction. The District is one of Delhi’s major satellite cities and is part of the National Capital Region. It is within commuting distance of Delhi via an expressway and Delhi Metro.The District is the second largest city in the Indian State of Haryana and is the industrial and financial centre of Haryana. It has the 3rd highest per capita income in India after chandigarh and Mumbai.

Jubilant Food Private Limited is part of the Jubilant Bhartia Group and is India’s largest food service Company. The company is supporting the Apni Raahein, Apni Azaadi (Sadak Suraksha, Jeevan Raksha) campaign on Gurgaon Ki Awaaz.

In episode 1 of the series, broadcast first on August 15, 2021, we have a conversation with the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the Gurugram District Road Safety Committee Dr Yash Garg, and Amit Bhatt, Executive Director - Urban Mobility - World Resources Institute, where they unpack the magnitude of the issues of road safety (one person dies on India’s roads every 4 minutes), the key factors causing road accidents and deaths, and the possible solutions to making roads safer, especially for pedestrians and cyclists.

In Episode 2, broadcast first on August 23, 2021, we focus on the safety of women on streets. We speak to architect and urban planner Sonali Vyas, Program Head Safetipin to unpack the key issues that make streets unsafe for women, and what citizens and the government can do to make the streets safer for women, and therefore, for everyone.

In Episode 3, we talk to surviving family members of people who have died in a road accident. We speak to Mihika Wahi Gupta, whose husband Alok Gupta was run down by a speeding car run driven by a drunk minor. More than a year later 23 August 2020, her life and the lives of her two children continue to be upended.
