Emergency Response: The Covid-19 Campaign

The Covid-19 Campaign is our emergency response to the Coronavirus pandemic. We ensure that verified information from district administration Gurugram reaches Gurugram residents

The role of community radio stations during disasters is well documented, be it earthquakes, floods or tsunamis. In 2020, Gurgaon Ki Awaaz has got to test its mettle during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.

Collaborating closely with the District Administration of Gurugram, through the Civil Defence team working directly under the Deputy Commissioner of Gurugram, Gurgaon Ki Awaaz is broadcasting the latest updates, health advisories and notifications, as well as lists of important helpline numbers every day. Our bi-weekly program Udaan addresses the stresses and anxieties during the prolonged lockdown. It is a live, call-in show and counselors are on air to take listeners’ calls. Every Monday and Thursday from 1 to 2.30 pm.

In an environment rife with rumour and misinformation, most of it being spread via social media, it is radio that is clearing the air, and ensuring that the administration can address the people even by just calling into the studio phone lines.

The Covid-19 Campaign depends on the bravery and efforts of our team of reporters who are working night and day to ensure that hard-to-read notifications are converted into understandable audio spots. We are also ensuring that all main advisories are available on a single online platform: The Covid-19 dashboard of the Gurgaon Ki Awaaz website.

We also appreciate the efforts of the Gurugram Civil Defence team, which has taken Gurgaon Ki Awaaz on as a core instrument in their efforts against the spread of Coronavirus.

The desperate call for food

It started about a week ago, perhaps around May 11, 2020. We had been receiving calls into the live broadcast for several weeks, desperate calls, people asking for food, for help, for trains or buses to go home. For help in getting their held-back salaries. We would give out helpline numbers, nodal officers’ numbers, and links where people could register for transport. But many would call back and say, the helpline is not responsive, rations are not being delivered, their names are not being called for trains or buses.

Addressing the psycho-social impact of Covid-19 through on-air counseling

As India completes nearly one month of an enforced lockdown, it has become evident that the stresses of losing livelihoods, and incomes, forced isolation and cramped family quarters, is leading to monumental psycho-social symptoms among people, especially the poor, which is also reflected in the huge spike in domestic violence and child abuse complaints in one month alone. To provide a support system to our listeners at this time of stress, Gurgaon Ki Awaaz, in partnership with Rajbala Foundation, takes its on-going Udaan series, and turns its lens on counseling during the Covid-19 lockdown.
